LABOR FÜR TYPOGRAFIE — TYPOGRAPHY LAB

Gemeinschaftsprojekt mit der Lettischen Kunstakademie in Rīga – drei Gruppen (Illustration bei Rūta Briede, Sound-Design bei Reinis Semēvics und Typografie im UdK-Typolabor) arbeiten zusammen an jungen Positionen zum Thema der Gedichtform »Dainas«, dem Heiligen Gral der kulturellen Identität Lettlands. Wir tauschen Fragen und Antworten per Post aus und inspirieren uns gegenseitig. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Institut Riga ist eine Ausstellung in der Lettischen Nationalbibliothek geplant, zudem sollen ein Musiktape und ein Zine entstehen. Da in Lettland das Semester schon am 7. September begonnen hat, ist das Projekt bereits in vollem Gange. Es sind alle eingeladen, mit dabei zu sein.

Collaboration project with the Latvian Academy of Arts in Rīga—three student groups (illustration with Rūta Briede, sound design with Reinis Semēvics and typography in the UdK Typography Lab) together work on young positions on the topic of the poetry genre “Dainas”, the Holy Grail of Latvian cultural identity. We exchange questions and answers per snail mail and inspire one another. Joint with Goethe Institute Rīga, an exhibition in the Latvian National Library is planned, and an additional music tape and a zine will be produced. Since in Latvia, the semester already started on September 7, the project is already up and running. Everybody is invited to participate.

Nach der ersten Runde vor einem Jahr liegt die Vorlesung des Typolabors nun in Buchform vor. Für die zweite Runde gibt es neu geordnete, angereicherte und auch komplett neue Inhalte zu sehen und zu hören. Die Zielgruppe sind Studierende aus *allen* Fachklassen und darüber hinaus, denn das Thema ist die Omnipräsenz der Typografie. Jede Fachrichtung erhält ihre eigene, grob skizzierte Typografiegeschichte. Anhand simpler Aufgaben werden die wichtigsten Punkte durch praktisches Mitmachen nähergebracht.

After the first round a year ago, the Typography Lab lectures have been edited together into a book. For the second round, additional content is to be seen and heard—either ordered, immersed, or completely new. The target group comprises of students from *all* studios and beyond, since the omnipresence of typography defines the central theme. Every specialization is given its own, roughly sketched typographic history. On the basis of simple assignments, key aspects will be deepened through practical contribution.

Der Typo-Club ist im Wintersemester eine regelmäßige Zusammenkunft im Zeichen der Kalligrafie. Englische Schreibschrift oder Anglaise kann mit Feder oder Pinsel geschrieben werden. Als die sogenannte »woman’s hand« war sie wie vielleicht kein anderer Schriftstil genderspezifischen Stereotypen ausgesetzt. Insofern kommt die Beschäftigung mit ihr der Erforschung einer verlorenen Welt gleich und bietet darüber hinaus Skills auch im Verständnis von Rhytmus, Duktus und Modulation im Schreiben. Und Spaß macht es auch noch – wirklich!

This Winter term, Typo Club is a gathering under the sign of calligraphy. Copperplate or Anglaise can be written by pen or by brush. As so-called “Woman’s Hand”, this style was probably exposed to gender-specific stereotypes like no other. Thus, its discovery equals to the exploration of a lost world and, beyond that, offers practical skills in the understanding of rhythm, flow and modulation in calligraphic writing. Plus, it is fun—it really is!
